Trump’s Growing Support for Cryptocurrency

Trump’s Initial Skepticism President Donald Trump has made headlines with his evolving stance on cryptocurrencies. Back in 2019, Trump was quite skeptical about Bitcoin and other digital currencies, famously tweeting that he was “not a fan” and expressing concerns about their potential use in illegal activities. This skepticism led his administration to prioritize strict oversight of the cryptocurrency industry.
A Shift Towards Support However, during his campaign for a second term, Trump’s growing support for cryptocurrency shifted to a more supportive position. In January 2025, he signed an executive order aimed at fostering innovation within the crypto sector and creating clearer regulatory frameworks. This significant move established the Presidential Working Group on Digital Asset Markets, which includes top officials from various departments. The group’s mission is to develop a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets.
One of the key aspects of the order is the prohibition of agencies from establishing central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Additionally, it directs federal agencies to provide recommendations on which digital asset regulations should be rescinded or modified. This shift is seen as a recognition of the transformative potential of digital assets and a departure from Trump’s earlier skepticism.
Announcing the Change During his announcement at the FII PRIORITY Summit in Miami Beach, Trump’s growing support for cryptocurrency was highlighted as he declared an end to what he termed Biden’s “war on Bitcoin and crypto,” aiming to position the United States as a global leader in the cryptocurrency space. He criticized the SEC’s approach to crypto regulation and claimed that many indictments related to cryptocurrency were politically motivated and dismissed before the elections.
